What we do

No, it’s not rocket science !

There are two prongs to our strategy:

a) Potholes, potholes, potholes.
and..
b) Projects.

Potholes

When Winter has passed and hopefully Spring has arrived, we survey all of our tarmac (on St Benedict’s Day) (a moveable feast) (St Benedict is the patron saint of potholers..) and we give every pothole a name then schedule what we can for filling, ideally during the summer months.

In the early years, our approach to potholes was merely to rough fill, as economically as possible.
This was in order to husband our resources and be ready to take on some bigger projects from time to time.

However, it soon became obvious to us all that “rough fill” did not cope at all well in some areas.  Therefore, we nowadays seek competitive quotes for the ‘professional’ (10 years guarantee) repair of as many potholes as we can from year to year. See our Potholes page for the current situation.

Alas, our resources are limited and there are projects that we would really like to save up for, but in the longer term we hope ideally to reach a position where we can budget for a schedule of road improvement works, leading to the formal adoption of our roads by Allerdale BC.  We live in hopes..

Projects

We are aiming to create a war chest which will enable us to periodically resurface large sections of our road network and also undertake larger environmental projects, such as traffic calming measures, road safety features, drainage improvements and cosmetic enhancements to improve our village environment.

Although UK finances are going through a period of turbulent austerity, we also aim to keep a weather eye open for any possible grant aid opportunities which might enable us to fast track particular projects along the way.

See our Projects page for more details.
